St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church grew out of a 1939 gathering of Episcopalians in the Prairie View A&M College community who sought a permanent congregation. The group organized formally as the St. Francis of Assisi Mission of the Diocese of Texas in 1950, with the Rev. James Murray, a Morehouse College graduate, as its first vicar. The church has long served the historically Black college town of Prairie View.
