History

Banker John P. Davidson commissioned Diedrich Rulfs to design this apartment building, completed in 1928 at 214 South Fredonia Street and named for Davidson's wife, Maria. It originally housed single working women such as clerks and telephone operators, following a statewide trend toward small middle-class apartment buildings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
