History

This marker at Nacogdoches commemorates the King's Highway, or El Camino Real de los Tejas, the Spanish colonial route that ran roughly 1,000 miles from the Rio Grande to the Sabine and points into Louisiana. Nacogdoches was a principal town along the road, which carried Spanish missionaries, soldiers, and later Anglo colonists into East Texas. Between 1915 and 1918 the Daughters of the American Revolution and the State of Texas placed 123 pink granite markers about every five miles along the surveyed route.
