Building 1001 is one of seven structures at the former Naval Air Station Chase Field individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The station near Beeville was established in 1943 by converting a municipal airport under construction into a military airfield, named for Lt. Commander Nathan Brown Chase, who died in a 1925 training crash at Pearl Harbor. Chase Field trained naval and marine aviators for decades before it was decommissioned in 1993; Building 1001 was listed on the National Register in 1994.
