History

The Sturgis National Bank traces its roots to 1875, when it was organized as the Abbott & Sturgis Bank, reportedly the first bank in Hill County, on a prominent corner of the newly platted town of Hillsboro. After the original frame building burned in 1882, the bank rebuilt in brick, and in 1912 it merged with Citizens National Bank, which took over the Sturgis building on the courthouse square. The structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places within the Historic Resources of Hillsboro.
