History

The building marked as McClelland Library on the Howard Payne University campus in Brownwood is considered the oldest educational building in continuous use in Texas, opening in 1876 as Coggin Academy. It became Daniel Baker College in 1889 and over the years served as classroom, dormitory, science hall, and home to college founder Dr. B. T. McClelland. It was serving as the McClelland Library at the time Daniel Baker and Howard Payne colleges merged in 1953; the marker was placed in 1964.
