The R. Q. Astin House, known today as the Astin Mansion, was built in 1920 in the English Georgian Revival style for Roger Q. Astin and his wife Nina Heard Astin. Roger, the youngest son of cotton planter James Hugh Astin, died in 1926 at age 39, and Nina lived in the home for the rest of her life before leaving it to the city. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 25, 1987, and now serves as an events venue.
