Captain William Ware (c.1800-1853) came to Texas in 1828 and fought for independence at the Siege of Bexar and the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1852 he founded Waresville, about a mile south of present Utopia, the first permanent Anglo-American settlement between D'Hanis and the Rio Grande and the first nonmilitary colony in Uvalde County. Ware died in 1853 and is buried in the Waresville Cemetery.
