History

Roma City Hall stands within the Roma Historic District, a remarkably intact Rio Grande border town that thrived as the head of steamboat navigation and a cotton-shipping port from 1829 into the 1880s. Many of its 19th-century buildings feature the distinctive molded and decorative brickwork introduced by German-trained builder Enrique (Heinrich) Portscheller. The district was listed on the National Register in 1972 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1993.
