The Cactus Theater, Lubbock's first suburban neighborhood movie house, opened on April 8, 1938 with the film "Wings over Honolulu." Financed by A.M. Leftwich for about $30,000 and designed in Art Deco style by architect Robert Maxey, it seated 720 and boasted more than 750 feet of neon on its marquee. The theater closed in 1958, was restored as a live-performance venue in 1994-95 as part of Lubbock's Depot District, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 8, 1998.
