This marker recalls the first permanent building erected at Big Spring, tied to the arrival of Heneage Finch, the Earl of Aylesford, who purchased some 37,000 acres in Howard County in 1883. The English nobleman's investment helped anchor the fledgling railroad town that grew up near the natural spring for which Big Spring is named.
