The Katy was the first railroad to reach Hillsboro, with passenger service beginning in 1881; the present depot was completed in 1902, combining Eastlake, Victorian, and Prairie elements. It welcomed visitors including financier Jay Gould and Presidents Wilson, Taft, Coolidge, and Truman, and served as a departure point for soldiers in both world wars. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
