History

Pinery Station is the stone ruin of a relay station on the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach route, built in 1858 at the crest of Guadalupe Pass in what is now Guadalupe Mountains National Park. At about 5,700 feet it was the highest station on the entire St. Louis-to-San Francisco line, built as a fortification with thick stone walls enclosing a corral and a three-room station house. The route was rerouted after only eleven months, and the station was abandoned in 1859. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
