This marker recalls the early lockups of Henrietta, the seat of Clay County. The town's first jail was a two-story wooden structure built in 1874, followed by an 1878 stone jail at Main and Ikard streets and a one-story wooden calaboose that stood in the center of a downtown block. By 1891 the stone building had been retired and was labeled the 'old jail' on Sanborn fire-insurance maps.
