History

This marker commemorates a military road that linked Fort Belknap with the settlements to the southeast. Fort Belknap itself was established in 1851 to protect the frontier from Kiowa and Comanche raids and became the hub of a network of roads, including routes surveyed by U.S. Army officers in the early 1850s. Troops, supply trains and settlers traveled the road, which helped open the region around present Newcastle in Young County. The marker stands within Fort Belknap park.
