Fort Belknap was established in 1851 by Brigadier General William G. Belknap as the northernmost in a line of U.S. Army forts guarding the Texas frontier against Kiowa and Comanche raids. A hub of frontier roads including the Butterfield Overland Mail, it was garrisoned by federal and later state troops until 1867, then dismantled for its building materials. Partly rebuilt beginning with the 1936 Texas Centennial, it was named a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
