The Waller County town of Brookshire is named for Captain Nathen Brookshire, born in Tennessee in 1793. He took part in the storming and capture of Bexar in December 1835 and served as a captain in the Texas Army in 1836. As a member of Stephen F. Austin's fifth colony he received title to a league of land in the area, and the fertile Brazos bottomland later drew the railroad that made Brookshire a thriving farming town. He died in 1853.
