History
The Fulton Mansion State Historic Site is located in Fulton on the Texas Gulf Coast in Aransas County and is one of the earliest Second Empire style buildings constructed in Texas. Colonel George Ware Fulton and his wife Harriet Gillette Smith built the four-story residence, dubbed 'Oakhurst,' overlooking Aransas Bay between 1874 and 1877, equipping it with then-advanced conveniences such as indoor plumbing, gas lighting, and central heating. After passing through several private owners, the dilapidated house was sold to the State of Texas in 1976, restored, and opened to the public in 1983. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and on January 1, 2008, was transferred from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to the Texas Historical Commission, which operates it as the Fulton Mansion State Historic Site.
