History

The Landmark Inn State Historic Site is a historic inn in Castroville, Texas, that traces its origins to a one-story limestone building and general store constructed by Swiss immigrants Cesar and Hannah Monod, with the complex dated to 1846. John and Rowena Vance bought the property in 1853 and expanded it to serve travelers on the Old San Antonio Road, adding a second story of guest rooms in 1874. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1965, became a contributing property in the Castroville Historic District in 1970, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in its own right in 1972. Donated to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1974 and opened as a state historic site in 1981, it was transferred to the Texas Historical Commission in 2008 and still operates as an eight-room inn.
