Tyler's Carnegie Public Library was built in 1904 with a $15,000 grant awarded in 1903 from the Andrew Carnegie library fund, on condition that the city furnish the site and maintain the library. A Chicago firm designed the Italian Renaissance-style building of limestone and brick with a red tile roof, which was doubled in size by a 1936 expansion. Listed on the National Register in 1979, it now houses the Smith County Historical Society museum and archives.
