History

The Matthew Cartwright House at 505 East Main Street in San Augustine is one of Texas's finest Greek Revival residences, built about 1839 and often attributed to builder Augustus Phelps with Sidney A. Sweet as contractor. It was originally erected for land developer Isaac Campbell as a gift to his wife, Elizabeth; after Campbell's death the house passed to a Methodist college and then, in 1847, to merchant and land baron Matthew Cartwright. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and has remained in the Cartwright family.
