Built about 1839 in San Augustine, the Matthew Cartwright House is regarded as an outstanding example of Greek Revival architecture and was the home of merchant Matthew Cartwright and his family. It was documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS TX-238) beginning in 1934 and was later restored by preservation architect Raiford L. Stripling. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and remains a private residence.
