History

This Henderson marker honors Thomas Jefferson Rusk (1803-1857), a Georgia-born lawyer who became one of the Republic of Texas's foremost leaders. Rusk signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, served as secretary of war and commanded troops after San Jacinto, was the republic's first chief justice, and later served as a United States senator. Rusk County and the town of Rusk are named for him; he is buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Nacogdoches.
