History

Built in 1888, the Mills County Jail was the first public building erected by the newly organized county, completed before Goldthwaite was chosen as county seat. The two-story native limestone-and-sandstone structure was built by Green and Nichols of Lampasas with iron and steel cellwork by the Diebold Safe and Lock Company, and it housed the sheriff's family on the ground floor with cells above. It served until 1977 and is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (1965) listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
