A Masonic lodge was organized about 1864 at or near Camp San Saba, a frontier post in McCulloch County where a company of the Frontier Regiment guarded against raids during the Civil War. Its members were drawn largely from the ranger camp. The lodge later became McCulloch Lodge No. 273, A.F. & A.M., and moved to the town of Mason, where the lodge retains the same name and number.
