History

The McCulloch County Courthouse in Brady is the county's second courthouse, with its datestone laid by the Brady Masonic Lodge on September 29, 1899 and construction completed in 1900. Built by Martin & Moodie of Comanche (listed as builders, with no separate architect named), the three-story sandstone building is in the Richardsonian Romanesque style and bears some resemblance to the work of James Riely Gordon; its clock tower has faces on all four sides though no clock was ever installed. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1967, and a Heart of Texas granite marker on the grounds notes the geographic center of Texas about five miles northwest of Brady.
