This limestone schoolhouse is the oldest public school building in Lampasas and a rare surviving reminder of segregated education in the region. African American students were taught here from 1898, and the present two-room vernacular limestone building was constructed in 1923 after voters approved funds in 1922. Through the 1940s the school offered only ten grades, forcing students to leave town for their final two years of high school; it closed with integration in 1963. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2009.
