History

The Grierson-Sproul House in Fort Davis was built in 1908 by Benjamin Henry "Harry" Grierson, Jr., son of Colonel Benjamin Grierson, who commanded the African American Tenth U.S. Cavalry (the Buffalo Soldiers) at Fort Davis and settled the family in the area. The one-story, L-shaped house is built partly of local pink volcanic tuff and was extensively rebuilt in 1914 after a 1912 fire, work carried out by Franklin Lee Sproul, Jeff Davis County sheriff from 1914 until he was killed pursuing robbery suspects in 1933. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
