History

The old Hays County Jail in San Marcos was built in 1884 to an Italianate design by Edward Northcraft and B. F. Donaldson, with a front L-shaped section housing the sheriff's office and living quarters and a rear two-story cell block. One of the few surviving Italianate buildings in Texas, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and designated a State Antiquities Landmark in 2008.
