Mission Nuestra Senora del Rosario was established in November 1754 by Father Juan de Dios Camberos of the Zacatecan college, west of present Goliad, to minister to Karankawan bands who had not settled at other missions. Named for a church in the Spanish hometown of Presidio La Bahia's captain, the mission taught its converts farming and at its height grazed some 30,000 head of cattle. By 1804 its buildings were failing, and in 1807 it was formally combined with Mission Refugio.
