History

The White House Department Store and Hotel McCoy at San Antonio and Oregon Streets in downtown El Paso was built in 1912 to a Chicago School design by Henry C. Trost, its seven stories sheathed in white terra-cotta that echoes the neighboring Mills Building. The White House store, founded in 1900 by Felix Brunschwig and his nephews, occupied the lower floors while a hotel filled the upper stories, and it remained one of El Paso's best-known businesses until it closed in the late 1970s. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 24, 1980.
