The Miguel Fernandez Hide Yard, known as "El Almacen," was established in the 1880s-1890s by Spanish merchant Miguel Fernandez as a combination store and warehouse serving the Texas Gulf Coast cattle trade, where ranchers exchanged hides and bones for supplies. Built in the local Border Brick style, the L-plan building features full-height brick pilasters, corbeled brickwork, and interior segmental arches, and is one of the few survivors of downtown Brownsville's historic Market Square. The City of Brownsville renovated it in 1987, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
