R.F. Hardin High School in Brownwood, formerly the Brownwood Colored High School, traces its origins to an 1885 school for Black children founded by former slave and Buffalo Soldier George E. Smith. It was renamed in 1934 for Rufus F. Hardin, himself born a slave, who became a teacher and principal after graduating from several colleges. The stone building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 and is the focus of ongoing efforts to become a museum and cultural center.
