The seven-story La Salle Hotel opened in 1928 as the tallest building in Bryan, built by businessman R. W. Howell and designed by an Austin architect with Classical detailing and a strong vertical emphasis. After decades serving as a nursing home and then a residential hotel it closed in 1980 and sat empty for seventeen years, until a city-backed renovation reopened it in 2000 and helped spark downtown Bryan's revival. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 26, 2000.
