Dr. Branch Tanner Archer (1790-1856) was a Virginia-born physician and a leader of the Texas Revolution. He served as president of the 1835 Consultation and, with Stephen F. Austin and William H. Wharton, as a Texas commissioner to the United States seeking aid for the cause. Archer County was named for him. A Texas Centennial marker honoring him was placed at Clute in 1936.
