History

Angleton's first permanent courthouse was built in 1897, a year after the city became the Brazoria County seat. County commissioners purchased the plans, originally drawn by Houston architect Eugene T. Heiner for the Matagorda County courthouse, and contractor Tom Lovell built the structure with its 90-foot tower for about $30,000. Enlarged and remodeled in 1920 and 1927, the building was replaced as a courthouse in 1940 and fell into disrepair before becoming the Brazoria County Historical Museum in 1980. It is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and a National Register of Historic Places property.
