The Bastrop County Courthouse was built in 1883 after fire destroyed its predecessor, to designs by the firm of J. N. Preston & Son with revisions by the prominent Texas architect F. E. Ruffini. The three-story Renaissance Revival building was originally unstuccoed; a 1924 remodeling stuccoed the walls, lowered the dome, and gave it a more Neoclassical appearance. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
