The original Reinaissance Revival style courthouse was modified in 1923 with the removal of the gabled roof and pedimented bays and soaring central tower. The dentiled cornice was replaced by a Mission style parapet and the original limestone facade covered with stucco.

The Bastrop County Courthouse was erected in 1883-1884 in the Renaissance Revival style after fire destroyed the 1851 courthouse, to plans by J. N. Preston & Son that were revised by Preston's former partner Frederick Ernst Ruffini. The three-story brick building has a copper-domed clock tower and was stuccoed in a 1924 remodeling. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 1975.
