The Old Lyford High School in Lyford was built in 1923 as the first high school in Willacy County, after a bond issue passed overwhelmingly in 1922, and was formally dedicated on February 29, 1924. Designed by the firm Smith & Kelly, the one-story building is constructed of tawny brick with cast-stone trim in a T-shaped plan, with classrooms at the head of the T and an auditorium in the north wing that hosted graduations from 1924 to 1958. It later served as Lyford Junior High until 1983 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1985.
