History

Captain Alfred Henderson Wyly (1808-1867), a Virginia native, joined the Texas army at Groce's Retreat in early April 1836, where he organized and was elected to command a small company from the Redlands region assigned to Col. Sidney Sherman's Second Regiment at the Battle of San Jacinto. He later settled in Hempstead, where he died and is buried in the Hempstead Cemetery.
