Ayres and built in 1920, was the home of U.S. Vice President John Nance "Cactus Jack" Garner and his wife Ettie from 1920 until her death in 1948. Garner, a Uvalde native who served as Speaker of the U.S. House and then as Franklin Roosevelt's vice president from 1933 to 1941, donated the main house to the City of Uvalde as a memorial to his wife. A National Historic Landmark, the house opened as a museum in 1973 and, now operated by the University of Texas Briscoe Center, is known as the Briscoe-Garner Museum.
