Designed in a mid-century Modern style and clad in buff brick on a stucco-finish base. Originally construced in 1926 in a simplified Classical Revival style, the building was heavily modified and expanded in the late 1950s. The current configuration is symmetrical, organized around a vertically oriented cast-stone entryway. It is characterized by blue-green porcelain spandrels and a simplified stucco cornice.

The Upton County Courthouse in Rankin was built in 1926 at a cost of about $36,368, with construction supervised by the David S. Castle Company of Abilene. Rankin had become the county seat around 1921, when homes and buildings were moved from the earlier seat at Upland. Leonard F. Crockett & Associates designed significant alterations and additions in 1958.
