Meshack (Shack) Roberts was brought enslaved to the Gilmer area in 1844; after emancipation he was beaten and left for dead by the Ku Klux Klan near Gilmer, then moved to Marshall, where he worked as a blacksmith and Methodist minister. Elected as a Republican to the 13th, 14th, and 15th Texas Legislatures beginning in 1873, he championed the education of Black children and helped establish Wiley College.
