During the Civil War, Camp Talley was a Confederate recruit-training camp at old Coffeeville in northeastern Upshur County. The 10th Texas Cavalry, later dismounted, was organized here with recruits drawn from the surrounding counties before being marched north in 1862, a journey on which disease claimed many of the men.
