History

The John and Eva O'Byrne House stands in Union Grove in southern Upshur County, a community first settled in the mid-1880s. Among its earliest settlers was John O'Byrne, a native of Ireland, who built a large plantation-style home and opened a sawmill; a school began operating near the O'Byrne house around 1886. The house is one of the small number of properties in Upshur County listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
