History

The Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site in Denison, Texas, preserves the two-story frame house, built circa 1877 in the Carpenter Gothic style, where President Dwight D. Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890, making him the first U.S. president born in Texas. The Eisenhower family moved to Kansas when he was two, and the birthplace was later identified and its purchase organized by local school principal Jennie Jackson; the museum was established in 1955 and the home and surrounding park donated to the State Parks Board in 1958. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1962 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 11, 2016. On January 1, 2008, the site was transferred from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to the Texas Historical Commission, which now operates it.
