Rayner, platted in 1889, was the first county seat of Stonewall County and once boasted more than sixty city blocks and a three-story stone courthouse built in 1891 to an Italianate design by Elmer George Withers. The town's fortunes collapsed when Aspermont won the county seat in 1898, and Rayner faded into a ghost town. A marker near U.S. 380 between Old Glory and Aspermont notes the courthouse site.
