History

This marker records the site of a mid-18th-century visita associated with the mission of San Agustin de Laredo at Camargo, established as part of Jose de Escandon's colonization of the lower Rio Grande beginning in 1749. A visita was a country chapel visited periodically by priests to say Mass and administer sacraments rather than a fully staffed mission. The State of Texas placed a granite Centennial marker here in 1936, west of present Rio Grande City.
