History

The Cotton Belt passenger depot opened on June 2, 1905, built by the St. Louis Southwestern Railway just west of its Tyler rail yard. The last passenger train ran in April 1956, after which the depot was used for railway offices until being abandoned; the Southern Pacific deeded it to the City of Tyler in 1988. Restored and reopened in 2003, it now houses the Cotton Belt Depot Museum, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
