Memorial Presbyterian Church traces its origins to a congregation organized on June 2, 1838 by Rev. Hugh Wilson, the first Presbyterian church established in the Republic of Texas and the oldest in the state. Meetings first gathered at Goodlow's schoolhouse west of town, and in 1840 the congregation relocated into San Augustine. The present sanctuary was built in 1887 under Rev. D. A. McRae, when the church was renamed Memorial in honor of its pioneer founders.
